For years, the Comandante C40 has held a clear position in specialty coffee as a premium hand grinder built around a highly refined burr geometry, trusted for consistency, clarity and tactile precision. The existing C40 range remains grounded in that same foundation, with varying finishes and coatings, wrapped around the original Nitro Blade® burr platform. Comandante still describes Nitro Blade as the original game-changer, and ten years on, it remains the gold standard. The new C40 Lab Series does not seek to replace that formula. Instead, it expands upon it. Rather than reworking the grinder into something fundamentally different, Comandante has used the Lab Series to explore burr geometry more deliberately. The Lab Series is intended to give users more freedom to experiment and explore flavour possibilities, focusing on how burr design can shape grind behaviour, extraction character and cup profile.
What stays the same?

At a glance, and in the hand the Lab Series is unmistakably a C40. The body, ergonomics, and accessory ecosystem are unchanged. This isn’t a departure, but a technical extension of the same platform.

The real shift is conceptual. The standard C40 asks you to choose a finish. The Lab Series asks you to choose a burr profile.

The Lab Series currently spans three distinct burr directions:
Nitro Blade® — the established benchmark
TIGERSHARK® — built for dense, hard-to-fracture materials
HAMMERHEAD® — tuned for sweetness, body, and fruit expression

Lab Series Nitro Blade: the reference point

The Lab Series Nitro Blade is the bridge between old and new. It uses the same burr geometry that defined the original C40. Still positioned by Comandante as the benchmark for balance and versatility. Its role here is important: it anchors the Lab Series. Nitro Blade is the known quantity, the burr that built Comandante’s reputation for clarity and consistency across brew methods. In this context, it’s less about changing flavour and more about establishing a baseline within a more experimental lineup.

Advantage

Reliability. This is the control sample; the safest entry point for anyone who wants classic Comandante performance within the Lab Series framework.

Lab Series Tigershark: built for density and resistance

TIGERSHARK® is where the Lab Series becomes more technically expressive. It starts with a familiar challenge: light-roasted coffee. Higher density and lower brittleness change how beans fracture, often pushing traditional burr geometries outside their comfort zone. Comandante’s response is a Double Shark-Tip Blade Structure: a dual-row cutting system designed to slice and fracture dense or semi-elastic materials more efficiently, rather than simply crushing them. Interestingly, development didn’t stop at coffee. Field use included grinding green spelt and rye in outdoor settings, reinforcing Tigershark’s positioning as a more rugged, utilitarian burr. Made from Nitro Rex® stainless alloy and fully washable, it’s clearly designed with durability and adaptability in mind.

Advantage

Performance under pressure. Tigershark is the most versatile option for dense coffees, very light roasts, and travel scenarios where consistency across tougher materials matters.

Lab Series Hammerhead: flavour-first design

HAMMERHEAD® takes a different approach. Less about mechanical challenge, more about cup character. Developed around Yellow Pacamara, a large, dense variety known for its complexity, this burr focuses on unlocking sweetness, body, and fruit clarity when grind quality is dialled in. Its Hexagonal Block Blade geometry, inspired by the hammerhead shark, is designed to handle larger beans with greater precision. Comandante directly links this structure to fuller-bodied sweetness and more defined, fruit-forward profiles. This is the most explicitly flavour-driven burr in the lineup. It’s not just about what the grinder can handle; it’s about what it emphasizes in the cup.

Advantage

Cup expression. For those chasing dense, juicy profiles with structured sweetness and clear fruit notes, Hammerhead offers the most targeted flavour outcome.
The Wrap up

The C40 Lab Series isn’t a replacement. It’s a refinement of intent. The original C40 remains centered on Nitro Blade, with variation expressed through design and finish. The Lab Series shifts that focus on burr-specific performance and flavour outcomes.

In practical terms:

  • Nitro Blade® remains the all-rounder
  • TIGERSHARK® targets dense, resistant materials
  • HAMMERHEAD® prioritises sweetness, body, and fruit clarity

The platform itself hasn’t changed. What’s new is the level of choice. Instead of selecting how your grinder looks, you’re now selecting how it behaves and how it shapes the cup. Seen this way, the Lab Series doesn’t replace the C40. It expands it, opening up a more deliberate and technically driven approach to flavour exploration.
